I'm back

Sorry I've been gone so long - I was out in the world having actual fun (including bicycle riding, raw clam eating, and old-fashioneds drinking) instead of virtual internets fun. But now I am back...
with a vengeance.

Ice Cube Shot Glasses

Saw this idea over at Zoom Yummy blog (http://zoomyummy.com/2010/07/01/ice-shot-glasses/)
and began imagining the many amazing possibilities. Tequila shots in a mint/lime/cucumber shot glass? Chilled soup shots? Mini Ceviche Amuse Bouche? A bloodmary oyster shooter in a tomato juice and horseradish shot glass?

Gummy Bear

Worldwide Silent Invasion

This is so very troubling...

The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth.
Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).
Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They're now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters.  "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.

In cases of starvation, physical damage or another crisis, "Instead of sure death, Turritopsis transforms all of its existing cells into a younger state."

Butter Sculpture

Who knew that butter sculpture went beyond your typical creepy Easter butter lamb?

Big Butter Jesus

In the most delightful story of the day, a jesus sculpture belonging to a church in ohio was struck by lightning and burned to the ground.  This sculpture was referred to by area residents as "Touchdown Jesus" and more stupendously "Big Butter Jesus".  There was even a lovely ditty inspired by this sculpture, called "Big Butter Jesus".  The chorus is as follows:

Big butter Jesus
Sweet cream Jesus
Oh country fresh Jesus
Unsalted Jesus
Oh Promise Jesus
Imperial Jesus
Can’t believe it’s not Jesus
Oleo Lord.

Can’t believe it’s not Jesus,
Oh spread the word.

Bacon Donuts

Just when I thought I'd had enough of the bacon craze, I tried Traif's bacon donuts...

Delicious, freshly made and puffy donut holes drizzled with dulce de leche and sprinkled with little slivers of salty flavorful bacon, accompanied by a refreshing and complementary espresso ice cream.

The other food was fantastic, too.  Highly recommended!

I Heart Puppets

Just when I thought I couldn't be more into puppets than I already am...Vietnamese Water Puppetry!
The puppets are made out of wood and then lacquered. The shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen, to control them. Thus the puppets appear to be moving over the water. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers would entertain each other using this form of puppet play.

Dinner success

At the moment, we're poor. Living on eggs, sad pasta, more sad pasta, and stale matzoh leftover from passover.  Tonight...we eat like kings!!!!!

Beer Battered Chicken
2 boneless chicken breasts
1 cup of beer (i used blue moon, still left over from our wedding in Sep. 09)
1 cup of flour (i used self-rising cause that's all we had)
1 cup olive oil (didn't have a full cup, used a smidgen of corn oil to make up the difference)
2 eggs beaten
Splash of milk
(all the following to taste)
Roasted Red Pepper Flakes
Paprika
Salt
Pepper
Celery Seed
Thyme
Chives
Oregano

Step one: Slice boneless chicken breasts into one inch strips
Step two: Mix flour with the various herbs, salt, pepper
Step three: beat two eggs in a bowl with a splash of whole milk and one cup of beer
Step four: Add flour/herb mixture to egg mixture and mix well
Step five: Heat oil until smoking hot
Step six: Dredge chicken strips lightly through flour and then into beer/egg/flour/herb mixture, allow to drip and add to pan
Step seven: have a few sips of beer, you deserve it
Step eight: turn chicken in oil after 2-3 minutes, should be golden brown
Step nine: brown other side and remove to a pan lined with paper towels
Step ten: serve with sauce of your choice, ours was honey mixed with sambal olek(pictures), chopped basil, a tiny splash of lemon juice, salt & pepper
yummy yum yum yum.

Accompanied by green bean/onion saute and instant (but real!) mashed potatoes

I'm scared but I like it...

Happy Mother's Day

Roasted Radishes

"...roasting a bunch of halved radishes in a hot oven with plenty of butter and lemon juice...Instead of spicy, crisp and crunchy, these radishes were sweet, succulent and mellow, vaguely like turnips but with a softer bite."

Calçotada

Someday, I will be able to do this.  The communal downing of hundreds of chargrilled calçots (type of green onions) dipped in a romescu sauce while drinking red wine happens end of winter, March/April in Spain.

If you can't get to Spain, check out Savoy or Back Forty.  Last chance to try it is Tuesday May 11th!

Mint Juleps

Mint Julep recipe from The Kitchn
http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/ingredients-herbs/mint-juleps-for-kentucky-derby-day-083439

The Kentucky Derby reminds me of mint juleps (obviously).  And mint juleps remind me of the scene in The Great Gatsby where on a stiflingly hot day they rent out a room at the Plaza Hotel so they have a place to drink mint juleps.  If I won the lottery, that's the first thing I'd do.

Zoo Prudes, a rant

Just wanted to share the following gchat between me and my husband...

me: so, the coney island aquarium had a walrus that is notorious for masturbating

me: it's a documented fact and i saw this little blurb about it the other day and a woman in the comments was going on and on about how inappropriate it is and how she's lucky her children were distracted by something in the other direction and all that

me: i think it's silly though. it's just an animal

Husband: whatever
I hate zoo prudes

me: ha ha ha, that is a great way to put it

Husband: so your kids see a animal touch its dick

Husband: I vow to never walk around freaking out over what my kids sees. They are in coney island, see sex workers and homeless people, a dirty beach etc, but god forbid they see an animal touching itself or fucking. Kids were born through fucking. they aint jesus christ. Not to mention, little kids likely wouldn't know what was happening anyway. And what should they do? put the walrus on medication, send it to sex therapy, kill it?

Husband: rant over

me: nice rant

Husband: merci beaucoup

If anyone is interested, there are numerous youtube clips of Ayveq the masturbating walrus on youtube. Sadly, he passed away in 2008 at the age of 14.
